Growing up on the rugged Cornish coastline was the perfect inspiration for Matt Andrews, the shaper of Emperor surfboards. Being surrounded by the ocean and a vibrant surf culture, led to the beginning of an obsession. He moved to Bristol to study for a degree in Aerospace engineering, whilst dreaming of surfing in Cornwall.
After spending time travelling around New Zealand and Indonesia, Matt was keen to return to the UK in search of a different challenge. Working with his hands, particularly with wood and traditional tools, brought the greatest feeling of satisfaction, providing the final piece of the puzzle. The idea had cemented itself, and Emperor Surfboards was born.
Using inspiration gathered from his time spent as a boat builder and cabinetmaker, he refined the craft and began to produce beautiful boards from locally sourced cedar. Now Emperor offers a classic range of hollow wooden surfboards, which can be customised in size, shape and detail.
